MOGADISHU, December 23, 2025 (Somalia Tribune) – The Somali Police Force has arrested 11 soldiers who were found illegally carrying weapons in central Mogadishu on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
The arrests followed security operations across several districts of the capital aimed at enforcing regulations that ban off-duty security personnel from carrying firearms within the city.
In a statement, the Banadir Regional Police Command said the detained soldiers violated standing security orders designed to protect civilians and maintain public order.
“The 11 suspects are currently in police custody and will be referred to the appropriate court to ensure compliance with the law and to take the necessary legal measures,” the command said.
Police noted that the operation is part of broader efforts to strengthen security in Mogadishu and prevent actions that could endanger public safety.
The arrests come as Somali security agencies tighten enforcement of existing weapons restrictions, particularly ahead of the local council elections scheduled for Thursday, December 25.
Authorities have announced that nearly 10,000 police officers have been deployed to secure the elections. Speaking to the media, Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Farataag) said the Somali Police Force has finalized comprehensive security plans to ensure the polls are conducted peacefully, safely, and fairly.
