MOGADISHU, 03 January 2026 – Somali government forces, supported by local defense units, have successfully repelled a planned Al-Shabaab attack on the Wargaadhi area in Middle Shabelle, dealing a significant blow to the militant group’s operations in central Somalia.
Security officials said the assault was carefully prepared but collapsed before the militants could gain momentum. Acting on advance intelligence that detected suspicious movements by Al-Shabaab fighters toward Wargaadhi, the Somali National Army (SNA) moved swiftly to establish defensive positions, confronting the attackers before they could reach their intended targets.
A fierce firefight erupted as the militants attempted to advance, resulting in the death of the commander leading the assault, according to military officials. Several other fighters were killed, while the remaining militants fled into surrounding areas under sustained pressure. Somali forces are continuing pursuit operations to prevent the group from regrouping or launching follow-up attacks.
“This operation reflects the growing strength of our intelligence capabilities and the close coordination between national forces and local communities,” an SNA officer said, adding that similar operations would continue across the region.
Military officials confirmed that Wargaadhi is now firmly under government control and described the security situation as calm. Troops remain deployed throughout the area to maintain order and reassure residents, many of whom had temporarily limited movement during the fighting.
Local authorities said no immediate threat faces civilians and praised residents for cooperating with security forces. Community leaders noted that the continued presence of troops has helped restore a sense of normalcy following the clash.
The Ministry of Defense said the outcome underscores the government’s determination to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s remaining networks, warning that any attempt to target civilians or undermine regional stability would be met with swift and decisive action.
Middle Shabelle has been a key battleground in recent months as federal forces and allied local militias intensify counter-insurgency operations. Officials said the successful defense of Wargaadhi highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and the importance of sustained cooperation between the Somali National Army and community defense forces in securing long-term stability.
