MOGADISHU, 03 January 2026 – The long-standing relationship between Mogadishu and Washington faced a diplomatic chill this week after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned remarks attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, in which Somalis were reportedly described as “trash.” Mohamud called the comments deeply offensive, stressing that they undermine the dignity of an entire nation.
Speaking to Al Arabiya English, Mohamud said such rhetoric risks reinforcing negative stereotypes about Somalis, particularly those living abroad. “Somalis are intelligent and capable people,” he stated, highlighting the skills, education, and contributions of Somalis around the world. He warned that careless language from global leaders carries serious international consequences.
While expressing his strong disapproval, Mohamud emphasized that Somalia remains a vital partner to the United States in security and counterterrorism efforts, particularly in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab. “Respect is the foundation of any partnership,” he said, stressing that mutual regard must guide the relationship between Mogadishu and Washington.
The president also praised the Somali diaspora, noting millions of Somalis living abroad play a constructive role in societies across the United States, including Minnesota, Ohio, and Washington. From doctors and business owners to community leaders, the diaspora contributes to both their host countries and Somalia’s development.
On the issue of migration, Mohamud maintained a diplomatic tone. He affirmed that Somalis legally residing in the U.S. have every right to remain, while noting that the handling of undocumented migrants falls under U.S. laws and institutions. He urged that discussions on immigration be conducted with fairness and dignity.
Mohamud’s response comes amid heightened debate in the United States over immigration, national security, and foreign policy rhetoric. For Somalia, a country rebuilding after decades of conflict, words from the White House carry weight. By speaking out, Mohamud reinforced the message that Somali people, both at home and abroad, deserve respect and recognition.
