The Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of the North Eastern State of Somalia has successfully concluded a capacity-building training programme on Water Management and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for Water Committees and Borehole Operators in Las Anod.
The training, organised in partnership with Oxfam, was designed to strengthen the technical and management capacity of local water management structures responsible for operating and maintaining community water facilities. The programme brought together members of Water Committees and Borehole Operators from various communities to enhance their knowledge and practical skills in sustainable water service delivery.
Throughout the training, participants received comprehensive instruction on effective water resource management, routine operation and maintenance of borehole infrastructure, and the respective roles and responsibilities of Water Committees and Borehole Operators. Sessions also focused on improving coordination between local management structures to ensure efficient operation of community water systems.
A significant component of the programme addressed Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), highlighting the importance of safe water handling, sanitation practices and hygiene promotion in protecting public health. Participants explored strategies for maintaining water quality, preventing contamination of water sources and encouraging hygiene awareness within their communities.
Facilitators also emphasised the importance of community participation, accountability and preventive maintenance in ensuring reliable and sustainable water services. Practical discussions enabled participants to exchange experiences, identify operational challenges and develop solutions tailored to the needs of their respective communities.
Officials from the Ministry noted that strengthening the capacity of Water Committees and Borehole Operators is essential for improving access to safe drinking water and ensuring the long-term sustainability of water infrastructure across the region. They added that empowering local institutions remains a key priority in enhancing community resilience and improving the quality of public services.
The Ministry expressed its appreciation to Oxfam for its continued technical and institutional support in delivering the training programme, describing the partnership as an important contribution to strengthening the water sector and improving the wellbeing of communities.
As the programme concluded, participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge and practical skills acquired during the training to improve the management of community water systems, promote good hygiene practices and ensure that safe, reliable and sustainable water services continue to benefit communities across the North Eastern State of Somalia.
