MOGADISHU, 28 December 2025 – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called on Somalis, particularly those in the northern regions, to remain calm and stand united in defense of the country’s unity and territorial integrity following Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland.

Speaking amid rising tensions, the president warned against internal divisions, urging citizens to rise above clan and regional rivalries. He said the moment demands collective responsibility and national solidarity.

“This is not the time for clan-based or regional competition,” Hassan Sheikh said. “We must bring together our strength and wisdom to protect our sovereignty and our existence as a nation.”

Addressing leaders in Somaliland directly, the president cautioned against aligning with foreign agendas, warning that such moves could drag the region into instability and long-term uncertainty.

“Do not mislead your people or push them toward a dark and uncertain future,” he said, adding that the consequences of such decisions could be irreversible.

Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed that Somalia’s position on Israel’s move remains firm and unchanged. He stressed that the federal government will not alter its stance under any circumstances.

“The position of the Somali government has not changed and will not change,” he said.

Despite the strong language, the president emphasized that dialogue remains the preferred path forward. He said the government remains committed to meaningful talks with the Somaliland administration to preserve unity and resolve longstanding misunderstandings through peaceful means.

Appealing to history, Hassan Sheikh addressed residents of the northern regions, reminding them of their role in Somalia’s national struggle and shared identity.

“It is not part of your history to invite enemies of the Somali nation onto your land,” he said.

He warned that the opportunity to reject such actions may not last forever, urging communities to act wisely while they still can.

“Today, you have the chance to refuse this path. Tomorrow, that choice may no longer be yours,” he cautioned.

Turning to the broader population, the president underscored that Somalia belongs to its people and that any attempt to divide the country will ultimately fail.

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s determination to defend Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and internationally recognized borders through lawful and diplomatic means, calling on all Somalis to stand together against external pressure.

“Somalia belongs to Somalis,” he said.
