EU, AU Reject Israel Somaliland Recognition, Back Somalia’s Unity

BRUSSELS, 27 December 2025 – The European Union has reaffirmed its firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity following Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

In a statement released on Thursday, the EU stressed that respect for Somalia’s constitution, alongside the principles enshrined in the African Union and United Nations charters, remains essential to peace and stability across the Horn of Africa. The bloc warned that any actions undermining these frameworks risk destabilising an already fragile region.

Brussels also urged renewed and meaningful dialogue between Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia, calling for long-standing disputes to be addressed through peaceful and inclusive talks.

The African Union echoed the EU’s stance, firmly rejecting any unilateral recognition of Somaliland. AU officials reiterated their unwavering support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and cautioned that moves challenging a member state’s sovereignty could set a dangerous precedent for regional stability.

Israel’s recognition drew swift condemnation from several countries across the Middle East and Asia. Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Iran all voiced opposition, emphasising the importance of respecting Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.

Turkey reiterated its longstanding commitment to Somalia’s unity and political stability. Egypt and Saudi Arabia stressed that unilateral recognition of breakaway regions violates international law and threatens regional peace.

Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Iran called on the international community to reject the move and urged all parties to pursue dialogue as the only viable path to resolving differences between Somaliland and the Somali federal government.

The growing diplomatic pushback highlights broad international concern that recognition of Somaliland outside a negotiated settlement could deepen tensions and undermine stability in the Horn of Africa.
