MOGADISHU, 27 December 2025 – The Somali Opposition Forum, also known as the Somali Salvation Forum, has strongly rejected reports suggesting that Israel has recognised Somaliland as an independent state. The group described such claims as a serious violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
In a press statement released on Friday, the forum expressed deep concern over circulating reports about the alleged recognition. It emphasized that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of the Federal Republic of Somalia and reaffirmed that Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and internationally recognized borders are non-negotiable. Any attempts to challenge these principles, the statement said, carry no legal or political legitimacy.
The forum warned that recognising Somaliland would contradict international law, the United Nations Charter, and the African Union’s Constitutive Act. Such a move, it added, could threaten peace and stability across the Horn of Africa and set dangerous precedents elsewhere on the continent.
Calling on the international community to act, the Somali Opposition Forum urged the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations to uphold Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also firmly rejected any external interference in Somalia’s internal affairs or attempts to alter its internationally recognised borders.
The forum reiterated its support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, particularly the right to self-determination, aligning with international law and principles of justice.
The statement concluded with a call for unity among all Somalis. Citizens across political and social divides were urged to remain vigilant in defending the nation’s sovereignty and safeguarding its territorial integrity during what the forum described as a sensitive and potentially destabilizing regional moment.
