MOGADISHU, December 23, 2025 (Somalia Tribune) – Somalia’s Federal Parliament has approved a nearly $1.4 billion national budget for 2026, marking another step in the country’s gradual push toward economic recovery and state-building.

During a joint session of both parliamentary houses, lawmakers endorsed a budget totaling $1,386,807,242, with 174 MPs voting in favor, four against, and one abstention, securing a clear majority.

The newly approved budget represents a modest increase from the 2025 budget of $1.359 billion. Government officials say the additional funds will be directed toward development projects, job creation, and expanded social services, sectors that directly affect the daily lives of Somali citizens.

The budget approval followed the full parliamentary process, beginning with the first reading on November 15, 2025, which outlined the framework. This was followed by second-reading debates on December 21, attended by 169 lawmakers, before the final vote formally adopted the budget.

Officials say the 2026 budget is aimed at strengthening state institutions, supporting economic growth, and improving public service delivery, as Somalia continues to face challenges related to security, climate shocks, and humanitarian needs.

With the budget now approved, attention turns to implementation, as authorities work to translate financial allocations into tangible improvements on the ground. As the Somali saying goes, “Warqaddu way fududahay, fulintuna waa dagaal”—the plan may be easy on paper, but execution is the real test.
