MOGADISHU, December 21, 2025 (Somalia Tribune) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has described relations between Somalia and China as historic, strong, and firmly rooted in mutual respect and sustained cooperation spanning 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) this week, President Hassan Sheikh said China has been a consistent and reliable partner since Somalia’s early years of independence, highlighting Chinese-funded infrastructure projects that continue to benefit the Somali people.

“China has supported Somalia since the early days of our independence. Hospitals, roads, and airports built with Chinese assistance are still serving our people today,” the president said.

“The relationship between Somalia and China has never faced ups and downs. It has remained stable and continuous.”

The president praised China’s economic and technological progress, attributing much of its development to the leadership of President Xi Jinping, whom he credited with guiding China toward prosperity and long-term growth.

“China is an example that many countries, especially developing nations and African states, can learn from in overcoming challenges and achieving sustainable development,” he said.

President Hassan Sheikh also highlighted China’s expanding engagement with Africa, describing it as a major opportunity for the continent and the international community. He pointed to cooperation in education, security, agriculture, technology, and the blue economy as key areas with strong potential for shared growth.

On education, the president emphasized Somalia’s focus on strengthening public education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), noting that China could play a critical role in technology transfer and skills development.

He expressed gratitude to China for its continued support to Somalia, particularly in security, development, and efforts to preserve Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.

Somalia and China on Tuesday marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation and expand mutually beneficial partnerships.
