MOGADISHU, December 18, 2025 (Somalia Tribune) – South West regional security forces on Wednesday seized a cache of heavy explosives allegedly intended for use by Al-Shabaab in planned attacks in Mogadishu, a senior military official confirmed.
The commander of the October 14 Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Abdirahman Mohamed Munye, said the explosives were intercepted in the Number 50 area following actionable intelligence received by security forces.
“Thank God, we successfully foiled the Khawarij’s plot to harm civilians. Our forces intercepted 10 dangerous landmines that were being transported for use in Mogadishu,” Lt. Col. Munye told reporters.
The commander praised residents of the Number 50 area for sharing timely information that helped security forces prevent the attack.
The seizure comes as Somali government forces intensify security measures in Mogadishu ahead of the upcoming local council elections. Authorities have expanded checkpoints, patrols, and monitoring along major roads and entry points into the capital to prevent potential attacks and safeguard civilians.
