Somalia: Jubaland President Meets UN and EU Envoys Over Political Deadlock

MOGADISHU, December 16, 2025 (Somalia Tribune) – Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam on Sunday held talks with the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, and European Union Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro, focusing on Somalia’s ongoing political challenges and the path toward resolving the current impasse.

The meeting centered on obstacles and opportunities facing Somalia’s federal state-building process as political stakeholders prepare for an upcoming conference in Kismaayo. Discussions highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing unresolved disputes affecting national governance.

President Islam outlined Jubaland’s position on the political situation, stressing the need for inclusive discussions and a nationally owned approach to resolving differences among political actors.

Swan and Di Mauro reaffirmed the continued support of the United Nations and the European Union for Somalia’s peace, stability, and institutional development. They urged all parties to demonstrate flexibility and responsibility to help advance the country’s political transition.

The officials also discussed preparations for the forthcoming Kismaayo conference, describing it as a key platform for political leaders to engage constructively and agree on mechanisms to overcome existing challenges, with the aim of securing long-term political stability for Somalia.
